xiaomi-redmi-y1-1-840x472New Delhi, India, 2nd November, 2017: After waiting for long, Chinese company Xiaomi has launched its first selfie-centric smartphone series in India. Smartphone players like OPPO, vivo and Nubia have been ruling the roost in the selfie-focused phone segments with attractive and powerful front shooters in India. Till date Xiaomi had never ventured into the segment possibly fearing drubbing at the hands of these well-entrenched selfie leaders. As most Xiaomi phones go, they are either fixed with poor front shooters, with very less to desire from the front shooters considering the quality of color production compared to phones from quality leaders like Samsung and Motorola.

Under the new Selfie category, the Chinese company introduced two smartphones: Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite. The Redmi Y1 comes with a 16-megapixel front camera coupled with an LED Selfie-light. Although Xiaomi claims that the high-resolution front camera paired with the LED Selfie-light simulates effects of natural lighting, and captures sharper and more vibrant self-portraits, the same can only be verified on use.

As always, this time too, the Chinese player takes to the online route for selling the devices. The products will be available through ecommerce major Amazon and the Mi store from November 8, 2017. But this time the products would also be available for purchase from offline channel. Otherwise quite usual to flash sales model, it would be interesting to see how these products would be received by people, especially in a touch-and- feel atmosphere. Most market experts still attribute the success of the Chinese company to the method of flash sales online and the lower cost of its products vis-à-vis competition. As more and more of its products make their way to offline stores, whether the same growth would be sustainable remains to be seen.

The Chinese player has roped in Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif as its product ambassador in India to gain customer confidence. Redmi Y1 comes with a 16 MP front camera, coupled with LED selfie flash, and 13 MP PDAF rear camera. It has a 5.5 inch display, and features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 octa-core processor. The 3GB+32 GB variant of Y1 is listed at Rs 8,999, and the 4GB and 64 GB variant is priced at Rs. 10,999.

The Redmi Y 1Lite comes with a 5.5 inch display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor. Redmi Y Lite has a 3080 mAh battery. It features 13MP rear camera. The Redmi Y 1 Lite’s 2GB + 16GB variant is listed at Rs 6,999. To attract customers, Xiaomi has tied-up with Idea Cellular to offer 280 GB of free 4G data along with the devices.
