The year 2020, tossed by the Covid-19 crisis, was a year of complete restlessness worldwide. Not only did we experience changes and disorder in our personal and professional lives, but the economy also witnessed instability and took a considerable downturn. The sudden lockdown restrictions and forced work-from-home scenario instigated almost everything to shift to an online work mode. And with an increased online presence, a significant rise in internet data consumption became apparent.

Although many industries have been adversely affected by the pandemic, there are a few industry verticals that have gained significant momentum with this rise in data consumption.
Let’s understand the top technology trends in 2021 and learn how enterprises utilize digital technologies to shape the way we will live our lives in the near future.

Education Sector
Pandemic has accelerated the pace with which the online education sector has gone through extensive changes at every level, from early years to adult learning and career development. The lockdown has given professionals time to refine their skills and get certified. Online education and e-learning will now blend into the existing educational system and will continue to be an important part. With an increasing number of students and rising content, the sector has undergone many enhancements. The quality of content delivery has improved a lot with the faster upload of video and audio and more stable connectivity. Over the past few months, smart work from home tools such as WebEx, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams apps are widely used, and this is expected to continue even in 2021. EdTech start-ups may have a great market in the near future.

Entertainment Sector
With people spending more time indoors during the pandemic, the telecast of regular TV programs and reality shows got much affected. Yet, the viewers continued to entertain themselves on the various OTT platforms available with movies, programmes of their choice, and gaming. This data streaming service via the internet on smart devices gained more popularity during the pandemic. The content delivery network’s role became significant in the entertainment sector as it enabled filmmakers to release their movies on major OTT platforms instead of waiting for the theatres to re-open. This trend will continue to bring in more and more consumers in the future.

Smart Infrastructure
The work from home scenario brought about major hurdles for enterprises during the pandemic. To ensure every employee had access to a device and stable internet connectivity were the foremost concerns to be met. Enterprises upgraded their office infrastructure to pull together these shortcomings. Enterprises have realized the need to be prepared well in advance for any untoward event in the future and are gearing up to make use of the latest digital technologies to strengthen their infrastructure.

Internet of Things (IoT)
Another promising technology trend that will continue to build prominence is IoT. The IoT is the future, and we are adopting fast with Wi-Fi enabled home appliances, entertainment devices, fitness gadgets, apps with location tracking, and more. In this technology age of driverless cars in the making, many more such technological advancements are expected along with AI’s power. IoT will play a bigger role in securing and analysing data.

Internet of Behaviours (IoB)
IoB is an upcoming trend that will continue to rise more in 2021. Many leading companies and businesses are taking benefit of technology to monitor their consumer and customer behaviours. Technological tools like location tracking, big data, and facial recognition would help companies understand their consumers’ needs and provide them with a better experience due to their behaviour patterns.

Digital Experience
Stay-at-home restrictions accelerated digitization, and more improvements in digital experience are expected in 2021. Data consumption has been on the rise ever since the pandemic. More people have been shopping online, and more people are making digital payments for any type of transaction. With digital banking, there has been a heightened cybersecurity risk, transaction downtimes, etc. This digital experience is bound to improve soon with better-advanced cybersecurity and faster content delivery.

Hybrid Cloud
Another trend is that of most businesses shifting towards the hybrid cloud model. The hybrid cloud model is more convenient as it helps businesses to meet their cloud infrastructural needs. Most giant public cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Azure, Oracle, and IBM aim to tackle different customer challenges of privacy, security and compliance, and exponential data growth with the hybrid cloud. With these trends, the year 2021 could be termed a year of digital growth. We may see more and more companies adopting digital platforms for enhanced business continuity. And with more job opportunities, the economy that was taking a toll has a great chance of restoring back, going beyond what was lost in the last year.
